My Background

I began drawing floor plans for my dream house when I was twelve years old. Soon I discovered books on Frank Lloyd Wright and started to develop a love for warm modern residential architecture that I continue to explore today.

After receiving my B.S. in architecture from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo I worked for several years in San Francisco at a large firm. About that time I became intrigued by the ideas and theories of Christopher Alexander (author of A Pattern Language) and soon went to work for him as an intern for a year, which included helping to construct a house he designed.

Intrigued by this experience I decided to learn more about how buildings were put together. I spent several years working as a carpenter and gained a real understanding of how houses are constructed. This experience has been a great aid in keeping my architectural design work buildable and affordable.

Over the years I developed a growing interest in sustainable design practices with a particular emphasis on making the most of the space you have.

In 2003 I started my own firm, Doug Coe Architect. As a one-person office I give each of my clients my personal attention. I pride myself on being quick to respond to calls and being a clear communicator. I like to design in a collaborative way with my clients, listening carefully to your wants, needs, and ideas as a basis for a home designed for the way you live.
